Thoughts on Lovebites' Budokan live show:

Image
I bit the bullet and decided to live stream this.  Not live live but you know what I mean.  I peeked at the setlist ahead of time so I'd say I know 95% of it, just not 100% when and where. Let's go holy diving.... 1) First and foremost I am so happy and so proud of the ladies for selling it out. I was really nervous them announcing this show, as they are about to cross the "old" threshold, in age and band time. But they sold it out, and it likely bought them some time in the business. 2) The ladies are properly singing backup vocals rather than using a track, and they sound pretty good, although they were a little too low on Stand & Deliver (in register, not volume). 3) As a general rule, if the band isn't promoting a new album, the first three tracks of their shows should always be The Awakening, The Hammer of Wrath, and When Destinies Align, in that order. 4) Speaking of new album, only two songs were performed from it, The Castaway & Eternally. Fine...

Lovebites: Outstanding Power

Image
After what seemed like an eternity for waiting for an announcement for a new full-length studio album, Lovebites made everyone's Thanksgiving more bearable by doing just that.  With a title that wasn't whimsical mumbo-jumbo crap that seems to plague metal these days:  Outstanding Power !      Now, I don't really do album reviews, and I especially don't write them for metal-archives, but this is an exception.  I mean my most popular post on said blog is a Lovebites' song-ranking for fuck's sake!  So I feel like I have to give a review of it, particularly since the metal press seems to be completely avoiding it, choosing to wait for the Napalm Records release instead.  Ladies, everyone says it, and I'll say it too, FIRE YOUR MANAGEMENT!  This is Jayne Andrews' levels of incompetence.  Hell, I'd entertain the notion that Andrews could do a better job!      If you want the short of ...

Changes Lovebites need to make to step up to the next level. (now with post-Outstanding Power assessments)

For those of you new here, Lovebites, the Japanese speed/power metal band that is of uniform Y chromosome, is my favorite modern metal band.  I love them and want them to be the second biggest thing to come out of Japan (I say second because nothing will ever beat Nintendo).  I want them to become the thing that so called metal elitist complain about, even though they are THE band of the metal elitists, as I am KING of the metal elitsts (I was hating the bands of my generation long before it was cool for any of you to do).      That said, they aren't there yet.  And I feel like if they stay the course as things are, its just not gonna happen.  So here I am, in all my armchair-quarterback-backseat-driver-pundit glory, with my suggestions on how Lovebites can ascend to the level of their (and my) heroes of Judas Priest, Iron Maiden and Motorhead.  Either with the next record (and by that I mean the one after ...

Ranking all of Lovebites songs from weakest to best. (Updated with Outstanding Power songs )

Power/speed/thrash metal band Lovebites comprise the best and most vital heavy metal band in a long, long time.  Not in recent memory have I been  so compelled to purchase every album and EP by a band.  They play heavy metal by old school rules with no emo or core bullshit, yet the infusion of what can best be called “anime music” influence has given them a fresh take on metal that only they can get away with.      The band themselves are still relatively new (8 years old as of this writing), so a challenging task such as ranking a discography by songs is not THAT difficult (they've just now crossed the 60 mark).  Still for such a compelling body of work, nothing is easy, and one else on the internet has done this yet (no, really), so allow me to the first so that everyone afterwords will base their future opinions around my glorious E-peen*.  Covers such as Eagle Fly Free and Painkiller will not be included.  They’re mor...
