Kai vs RYM metal charts: 2000

I suppose you could say 2000 was the year I discovered metal.  At the very least in the popular culture one person who released metal is really a rock & roll car with the best possible illegal upgrades (Ozzy Osbourne), and a bunch of immature dumb shits who thought growling instead of singing over rejected Pantera riffs made you cool (pretty much everyone on Ozzfest that formed a band after 1995).  Losers still bemoan that nu-metal was the last time metal was mainstream, wheras I, correctly bemoan that power metal/classic metal would have done the same thing if mono-culture was socially engineered to do so.  With one irritating exception, I don't think we'll see any of that alt-crap in the top voted of 2000.  But I can't picture the top voted being great either.  Let's go holy diving....

1. Electric Wizard- Dopethrone

I'd be lying if I said I was down with the good, undergound shit back in 2000 and told you I listened to this album while every other shmuck listened to White Pony. But I would be lying.  I would also be lying if I told you this was my favorite album of the year.  The mixing could stand to strip away some of the rhythm tracks that blur the lead guitar.  2000 seemed to be peak lead guitar shame and it's almost like they didn't want you to know there were leads so you can hear them but not really?  Whatever.  NUCLEAR WARHEADS READY TO STRIKE THIS WORLD IS SO FUCKED LETS END IT TONIGHT

Should this album be on a top 10: Yes

Would this album be on my top 10: Yes

2. Deftones- White Pony

Rather that repeat what I said when during the Around The Fur entry, I will tell you a story.  It was Grammy awards night, and everyone was excited to see Eminem's performance (this was back when he mattered, if you could believe that).  I only wanted to see if Iron Maiden won the metal Grammy.  At the very least I was hoping Deftones wouldn't win.  They did, I cursed out a storm in front of family and everybody.  The TV was shut off, and everyone was sent to bed and we missed Eminem's surprise duet with Elton John.  Honestly, worth it.  The fuck was he doing there anyway?  Way to steal Dido's moment you asshole.  I really want to crack him over the head with a crowbar for telling James Hetfield on Howard Stern that "Nothing Else Matters" is one of the greatest songs ever written because thrash makes his pussy poser ass boomers cry.  He might as well do a duet with Bret Michaels because its the same damn song as "Every Rose Has Its Thorn."  Fuck Elton John.  I wish he died instead of Ozzy.

Should this album be on a top 10: No

Would this album be on my top 10: No

3. Immolation- Close To A World Below

Inflated from the Fantano rub?  Yes.  But I'm kind of ok with it. If nothing else the album cover is 100% an accurate sonic description of what you're about to hear.  Well maybe there should be subtle traces of hornets as well, because this album sounds like burning in hell while being stung by hornets.  Close to A World Below feels like it was the last new death metal that mattered before things either got stale or mutated into lame ass mall-core.

Should this album be on a top 10: Yes

Would this album be on my top 10: Yes

4. Weakling- Dead As Dreams

More like Dead as....Dead am I right?  I don't know anything about Weakling.  I'll plead the fifth early I guess.

Should this album be on a top 10: Yes

Would this album be on my top 10: don't know

5. The Chasm- Procession to the Infraworld

Obligitory Who?  This seems like the sort of thing Loudwire would champion to make Immolation fans mad.

Should this album be on a top 10: No

Would this album be on my top 10: No

6. Broken Torso- The Ultimate Abhorrence

    Never heard of it.

Should this album be on a top 10: ?

Would this album be on my top 10: ?

7. Lykathea Aflame- Elvenefris

I guess I'll have to flip a coin to decide which of these I give a listen to on spotify before publishing this entry....

Should this album be on a top 10: No

Would this album be on my top 10: No

8. Discordance Axis- The Inalienable Dreamless

...might as well be this.  Grindcore never really clicked with me unless it could be confused for death metal. Not really the case here, as the vocals go through all different textures, but I'd rather this be #2 than White Pony.

Should this album be on a top 10: Yes

Would this album be on my top 10: No

9. Dying Fetus- Destroy The Opposition

At least I've heard of this. [Addendum: Listening now.  It's fine.  It's post None So Vile death metal.  Doesn't really bring anything new to the table].

Should this album be on a top 10: Yes

Would this album be on my top 10: No

10. The Day Forward- The Transient Effects of Light On Water

So I accidentally scrolled to see what #11 was and I blew my fucking top because Gamma Ray's god-tier Blast From The Past is listed there.  Fuck these obscurist death metal hipsters for keeping real music out of the top 10.  On top of that, it seems like this album has the sub-genre of everything except metal: Core everything, screamo, fuck you Rate Your Music.

Should this album be on a top 10: No

Would this album be on my top 10: No

I'm honestly not sure whether or not Hybrid Theory or MD50 whatever or Chocolate Island from Mario Kart blah blah being on this list would be better or worse.  No Brave New World either. Which I guarantee you most people who aren't terminally online have heard of more than 2/3 of the also-rans here. Reinventing The Steel didn't make it here either, but even that album is controversial amongst the fanbase. Again, I'd rather listen to that than most of what's here.  Hell I'd rather listen to Immortal's Damned In Black than most of whats here, and that's one of their weaker albums.

I'm not sure how much further on this I'm gonna go.  The lists are only gonna get worse and worse from here and I don't even own 10 albums from 2001 at all.  I have 10 for 2002, so I might do that and maybe do lists for the 00, 10, and 20 decades.

My alphabetical top 10:

BLACK LABEL SOCIETY- STRONGER THAN DEATH

CHILDREN OF BODOM- FOLLOW THE REAPER

DIO- MAGICA

ELECTRIC WIZARD- DOPETHRONE

GAMMA RAY- BLAST FROM THE PAST

HELLOWEEN- THE DARK RIDE

HIGH ON FIRE- THE ART OF SELF DEFENSE

IMMOLATION- CLOSE TO A WORLD BELOW

IRON MAIDEN- BRAVE NEW WORLD

PANTERA- REINVENTING THE STEEL

Wait a minute....wasn't MD 50 the name of a Dave Mustaine solo project?
