Kai vs RYM metal charts: the 00's decade


    


    Not sure why I'm doing this.  Definitely against my better judgement.  I guess just stopping on 2002 didn't feel quite right.  I guess to proper finish out the decade I changed the chart maker from a specific year to a decade.  Some of these will be repeats of course.  For the final time, let's go holy diving.....


1. System of a Down- Toxicity

    Covered this already.  Best of the decade?  No.  But again, at least it ain't Blackwater Park.

Should this be on a top 10 of the decade: Oh....I suppose.

Would this be on my top 10 of the decade:  No.


2. Electric Wizard- Dopethrone

    Wow, nothing from post 2003 is considered better than this, huh?  I can think of a few albums that do such.  And as I said, I like Dopethrone.  Would understand if lead guitar was louder in the mix.

3. Deftones- White Pony

    A lot of people that went to highschool from 99-03 are running this site now aren't they?  Well guess what, I did too, and I say you people suck.  You're all jacking each other off like a van in the 70s unironically bleating WEEEEE ARE THE LEADURRRRRRS.  Well bleed out of control because you all have shite taste.

4. Boris- at Last Feedbacker

    I know nothing about Boris.  But like Converge, they don't do anything to innate me piss me off like Deftones, Deafheaven or Babymetal.  I do intend to check them out.  Until then they get a pass.

5. Tool- Lateralus

    Oh, thank god.  If I was a betting man this might be the only album I like on this top 10.  And even then it would probably just be #10 on my personal list (which you not see numbered, you will see it unordered, as usual).

6. Converge- Jane Doe

    I respect Converge, or at least Converge don't do anything that actively piss me off.

Should this be on a top 10 of the decade: Oh....I suppose.

7. Opeth- Blackwater Park

    I should start calling this band Simpeth cos I think they turned the metal scene into simps.

8. Gojira- From Sirius To Mars

    Gojira can also be filed into the same folder Converge and Boris do, but "Flying Whales" is one of the worst songs I've ever heard.  It takes way too long to get going, while most songs with the same dynamic ("Fade To Black," "Beyond The Realms of Death," "Edge of the World") have already gotten loud and have already made it halfway through the second verse.

9. Opeth- Ghost Reveries

    Ghosts, huh? I imagine this would be entertaining if it was the sound of Luigi beating the shit out of these soyboys with his mansion vacuum cleaner.  But if it was the fanboys wouldn't rate it so high.  God Simpeth suck ass.

10. Mastodon- Crack the Skye

    Holy shit on a shingle NOW they prop up Mastodon!  So much for my narrative on Leviathan being the last album everybody agreed on.  Thinking about it, I get it.  There's more proper singing and guitar solos aligning it self with more classic metal values than perhaps any other Mastodon song up to this point.  Fair enough, but I still think "Ghost of Karelia" is an awful song.

    Well, there you go.  I suppose the next logical step is for me to do the 80s, 90s, possibly 10s decade.  But a), all of the albums on the first two I'd be familiar with and would thus be repeating myself, and b) even though I don't think the 2010s were as poisonous to metal as the 00s were, it would still be a cesspool of hipster crap and latter day Deftones albums which even fans at the time (i.e., people not brainwashed by China) didn't even like.  We'll see.  Perhaps I should do the 70s....

Six spicy takes from yours truly.

      Hot take videos/articles are all the rage these days, so why not pinch my loaf in the punchbowl?  Here are six hot takes I have regarding metal of today and past events (probably more than likely past events). 1. Stop calling it 'NWOBHM.'      When Bruce Dickinson fleetingly referred to the New Wave of British Heavy Metal movement as "NWOBHM" in shorthand on the Classic Albums documentary on  The Number Of the Beast , it was so supposed to be just that, fleeting.  As in, not supposed to be shorthand common term.  Also, nothing like calling something that's 40, going in 50 years old new wave ay?  Here is where I feel we need to take a cue from black metal and start calling it the second wave of heavy metal.  Because really that's what it was.  The first wave was Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple and Budgie.  Yes there would be influential outliers that fit into neither wave (Judas Priest, Thin Lizzy, Motor...

Kai vs RYM metal charts: 1980

     I'm a frequent visitor of RYM, as I'm sure any music obssessive is.  Granted it's not as fun as it used to be (i.e. the metal fans got overrun by the new wave hipsters and Kendrick Lamar fans), but it is a fun mental exercise to get a sample of taste.       One feature of the site is the "chart."  This function essentially allows you to look at a year and determine users favorite albums of such, even of genre.  So I decided to look at the top 10 highest rated albums of the year and give my two cents and whether or not I think they should make a top 10, and whether they would make mine!  I'm not gonna do the 70s because while metal was born in the 70s, there wasn't enough of anything to make a top 3 at times, never mind a top 10.  So we shall start at a nice, easy agreeable point like the year 1980.
